you know what i think is really cool about dungeon meshi? the fact that it really handles the whole 'how our food is made' so gracefully. in this day and age, we've become so disconnected from how our food is produced and distributed that the thought of how our food is obtained brings disgust to many people (and for the big industry farms, it honestly should! but im referring to our existence as omnivores in the food chain). marcille acted ridiculous whenever the thought of killing a monster for food is brought up, but honestly, she's a great model for how many people nowadays react whenever they have to truly think about what they are consuming/are brought to a meat farm.

senshi shows the characters (and us, the audience) about the process of making food in a respectful, genuine way to the creatures he has used to produce nourishing meals. by explaining the nutrition and benefits of each creature, he creates and healthy relationship between the consumers and the meal they have. the show really brings a new dimension of respect for each of our meals. truly the bob ross/marie kondo of cooking.

Dungeon Meshi has a wonderful take on loving vs. respecting when it comes to animals.

Senshi loves the dungeon very much, but in some aspects, he has a hard time learning how to respect it. A good example of him loving but not respecting the nature of the dungeon is Anne, the kelpie.

I believe Anne did care for Senshi. She visited him each and every time he came to the waters. However, Anne was a kelpie, not a horse. Senshi loved Anne as a horse; he did not respect her as a kelpie. But Laios did. He understood what Anne was and did not let his love for monsters blind him from their nature. He understood what Anne was and respected her enough to not ignore that fact. But unfortunately, Senshi could not, and by denying Anne that respect, he sealed her fate.

I love how DM really talks about the nature between monsters and animals. Anne should not have been put in that situation to begin with. Jumping on a kelpie's back is the equivalent of shoving your head into a bear's mouth. It’s not fair to expect the wild animal to not bite.

Senshi loved Anne, but Senshi did not respect her.

Reader ends up going to Senshi, constantly volunteering to help with preparing the Monster meals.. her way of trying to hint to Laios that she’d make a good Wife if she learns how to cook Monsters like Senshi.. she even encourages Senshi that he should definitely make an official Monster-Cookbook! Promising she’d buy’em and be a customer for life if he made series of Cookbooks! (Smitten Girlie’s already daydreaming of the possible domestic bliss of her making Monster Meals for Laios, maybe even the two of them cooking together!)
